Madonna and Child with Saint Martina and Saint Agnes

El Greco-334939

This painting is called Madonna and Child with Saint Martina and Saint Agnes and it was painted by El Greco in 1597/1599.  In the center of the painting, the Virgin, Mary, is holding her baby, Jesus. Surrounding them are clouds and two female angles, the clouds on the top of Mary look as if they are people or other angles .Below them are two female saints. The saint on the right is Saint Anges; she holds a lamb with which she once appeared after her death to worshippers gathered at her tomb. The other saint, next to the lion, is said to be the feminine form of the chapel’s founder, Martin Ramirez, or Saint Thekla who appears in Saint Martian’s visions. There has been much controversy on who El Greco actually painted.

This painting is an example of a Mannerism painting. We see a large variety of colors that play with people’s emotions. On the top we see dark depressing colors, but in the middle and on the bottom the colors become brighter which lightens our mood.
