Witches’ Sabbath

hw for history

The painting I chose today is named Witches’ Sabbath. It was painted by Francisco Goya in 1798. The painting portrays the devil in the form of a garlanded goat. Around the “goat” there are witches. They seem to be sitting around the devil as if he were their priest. Two of the witches hold up babies to the devil. We know that witches enjoyed hurting the innocent and naive which is why they are usually portrayed with infants.  Also if you realize the moon is the opposite way in which it is usually portrayed. There is also a corpse of a dead baby laying on the ground. And one of the witches if holding up a dead baby’s corpse to the devil. The darkness of the night sky and the bats gives off a little haunted feeling.
